Artesian Wells

Long before Prattville became “The Preferred Community,” it was known as “The Fountain City” because of its numerous artesian wells. Many of these wells were capped or ceased to flow when efforts were made to move them. However, many wells still produce gallons of sweet, free-flowing clear water daily. At many of the public wells, thirsty citizens wait their turn to fill plastic jugs with the fresh water. Enjoy a drink of water and sit a spell under the tin-roofed well shed on Doster Road, sip from a dipper at the well in the back yard of the Prattaugan Museum/Heritage Center, slake your thirst at Heritage Park overlooking Autauga Creek, or at any of the other public artesian wells.

Prattaugan Museum & Heritage Center

History buffs and those interested in genealogical research will enjoy a visit to this c. 1840 Greek-revival house within whose walls Prattville and Autauga history was made. Numerous interesting artifacts from the Pratt Family, as well as other items depicting the history of families who settled in Autauga County, are housed in the Prattaugan Museum, operated by the Autauga County Heritage Association. Old newspapers, books and other records, are housed in the Heritage Center. Admission is free. Open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The adjacent “Little House” is available for meetings. Old Prattville & Prattvillage Garden

Efforts to preserve older structures in danger of being torn down resulted in Old Prattvillage. Property owners remodeled existing houses and worked with the Autauga County Heritage Association in relocating the historic Mims Hotel and Slaton House to the area. Businesses and offices are now located in the charming “village,” which is adjacent to the charming garden maintained by the Master Gardeners.

Daniel Pratt Historic District

When Daniel Pratt chose what is now Prattville as the site of his business ventures, he designed areas which would be devoted to manufacturing, retail businesses, churches, schools and residences. Since 1984, this “planned community” has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A driving tour map of the district may be obtained from the Mayor’s office, Prattaugan Museum or Chamber of Commerce.

Buena Vista

This beautiful circa 1830 structure was the first Autauga County entry to the National Register of Historic Places. Legend has it that Andrew Jackson patterned the staircase at his home, The Hermitage, after visiting. Buena Vista is operated and maintained by the Autauga County Heritage Association. It is available for weddings and parties and is open for tours on Tuesdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., or by appointment.

Capitol Hill & Prattville Marriott at Capitol Hill

World-class golf is played in Prattville at Capitol Hill, the crown jewel of the Robert Trent Jones golf trail. An adjacent state of the art conference center and hotel Prattville Marriott at Capitol Hill, offers excellent amenities for business groups and individuals. The Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic has been held at Capitol Hill for several years.

Cooters Pond Park

Two boat ramps, docks, riverwalk, picnic grills, tables, basketball court, large greenspace for flying kites, touch football, frisbee-tossing, family activities. Three pavilions available for rental.

Heritage Park

Great place to view the Autauga Creek dam, millpond and Daniel Pratt’s industrial buildings. A series of “Brown Bag Concerts” will be held here this spring and summer.

Overlook Park

A section of Overlook Memorial Park was set aside for a Fragrance Garden which is under construction. The garden will feature plants and shrubs which can be identified and enjoyed by their odor, thus giving those with limited or no sight an opportunity to enjoy the garden. Future plans include descriptions in Braille and other amenities which will allow those with physical limitations to enjoy the area. Playground and walking path. Pavilion available for rentals.

Pratt Park

Located in the “heart of old Prattville” and named as “America’s Favorite Park” by Coca-Cola in 2012, features a splash pad, small pond, walking trail, ampitheatre, picnic tables. Adjacent to “A Child’s Place” playground. Site of numerous community events, including the Lions Club Fourth of July Barbecue and Service League’s Labor Day Barbecue. Barbecue pit and two pavilions available for rentals. Creekside Concerts are held in the ampitheatre during the spring and summer months.

See, Pick, and Eat Nut Grove

This grove was planted by the Prattville Tree Commission so that citizens, particularly children, could learn about the various types of nut-producing trees and experience the satisfaction of sampling the nuts. This nut grove is located in Cooters Pond Park on the banks of the beautiful Alabama River.

Wilderness Park

In this park, giant oriental bamboo soar 60 feet to form a canopy in the sky. The bamboo competes with native trees and shrubs to form this most unusual area, which also contains the State’s second largest Beech tree.

The Creek Walk

Creekwalk, which runs along the Autauga Creek, is a recreational trail established in 2006. Features on the trail included small garden with picnic tables, a gazebo, and artesian well.

Autauga Creek Canoe Trail

Enjoy canoeing/kayaking/tubing down Autauga Creek, a beautiful natural resource that winds through the City of Prattville and Autauga County. The official access point is behind Pratt Pond and the exit point is beyond County Road 4. The trail is just under 4 miles long and provides exercise, experience with nature, and a lot of family fun.
