1/15/2008 - Prattville celebrates 6A State title Prattville celebrates 6A state title By Marty Roney mroney@gannett.com January 15, 2008 PRATTVILLE -- A three-peat. The superintendent threw the idea out there, the coach said it, the mayor reserved space on the scoreboard and the Prattville High School football players pledged to deliver another 6A state championship this year. A crowd of about 2,000 was on hand at Stanley-Jensen Stadium on Monday night to officially celebrate the team's 2007 championship, its second in a row. The festivities started out with a parade downtown. The Lions beat Spain Park in December for the championship. The celebration was delayed because of exams that next week and then the Christmas break. The party gave this football-crazy town another reason to gather at the stadium, home of so many Friday night heroics. "I can't believe it's been a month since we had a football game. Somebody better hook it up," Superintendent of Education Larry Butler shouted to the already raucous crowd. Butler was an offensive line coach on Prattville's 1984 championship team. "You're looking at the best team in Alabama, the best team in the country right here. We will be back next year; we will bring another championship home to Prattville." Senior Dekendrick Moncrief just wants to enjoy the second championship. Moncrief was all over the field for the Lions this year, playing at the wide receiver slot with time in as quarterback and punt returner. "It's hard to win a championship, and even harder to defend a championship," he said. "This year was great, the parade was great. Next year.., yeah, they have what it takes. Coach can get them there." Head football coach and athletic director Bill Clark credited the community for its support of the team. "It's everybody. It's the players, it's the assistant coaches, it's the cheerleaders, it's the band," he said. "It's the students and teachers. But I tell everybody, we play for something bigger. We play for Prattville. And when we see this stadium filled every Friday night, it makes a difference." Lisa Fuller, a 1983 graduate of PHS, made the parade and rally at the stadium. "Prattville has grown a lot since I was in school, but one thing has stayed the same," she said. "We love our football team. In the fall, Stanley Stadium is the place to be on Friday night when the Lions are in town." |
